Hydroponics gardening is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions instead of soil. Hydroponics is derived from the Greek word hydro, which means "water" and ponos, which means "labor or water-working". First discovered in the 19th century, many people have adopted this alternate method of growing plants and vegetables.
Hydroponics gardening is as easy as ordinary gardening. Both of them require enough light, water, temperature, and humidity. But with hydroponics, no soil is used. Instead a soil substitute holds the roots while the water carries nutrients. Indoor hydroponics gardening is not that difficult and plants respond well to this method of growing.
This is one of the major points in hydroponics gardening since it sustains the plants. One has to ensure that this nutrient solution maintains a pH level of 5 to 6 after dilution. In hydroponics gardening, the plants should be watered more than three times a day, which is usually done using a pump and a timer.
If your hydroponics garden is indoors, you will want the temperature to be between 71 to 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Naturally, this temperature may vary depending on the different types of plants you are growing, e.g. tropical plants.
Put your plants somewhere they can receive an abundant amount of light. Artificial light can be used. High-pressure sodium lights or bulbs are a good substitute for natural light.
Humidity is good. When the room̢۪s temperature rises, the air will be able to hold the right amount of moisture your plants will need.
For ease, a hydroponics system can be fully automated. Since it is water-based, the gardener has no dirt to dig or weeds to pull. Also, the water can be re-used to prevent wastage.
With hydroponics, a high yield of quality plants can be easily achieved. Home hydroponics systems and DIY kits are readily available in most hardware stores.
